The nutritional information panel is the part of the pack nobody wants to spend design time on — and it’s exactly why it so often goes wrong. Founders pour weeks into the front panel and then treat the nutritional panel as a compliance box to tick at the very end. That’s a mistake I see constantly, and it’s an easy one to fix.
It’s not just a legal requirement — it’s a purchase decision
A meaningful share of shoppers, especially in health-adjacent categories, flip a pack over and check the panel before they decide. If it’s cramped, badly aligned, or hard to read at a glance, you’ve made them work for information they were already inclined to look for. That friction costs sales, even when the numbers themselves are good.
Where I see this go wrong most often
- Squeezed in as an afterthought, once the rest of the back panel layout was already locked, leaving no proper hierarchy or breathing room
- Font size dropped to the legal minimum to fit more marketing copy elsewhere on the pack — technically compliant, practically unreadable
- No visual hierarchy between the standard nutritional information (which is mandated) and any additional claims you want to highlight (protein content, sugar-free, etc.)
- Inconsistent formatting across a range, so a shopper comparing your product to your own other flavours can’t easily compare like for like
Compliance is the floor, not the ceiling
Meeting the mandatory format is the minimum bar. Brands that treat the back panel as a design opportunity — not just a legal obligation — use it to reinforce trust: clean alignment, sensible type scale, and clear separation between mandatory content and marketing claims. It signals the same care that (hopefully) went into the product itself.
What I’d fix first
If your nutritional panel currently feels like information you don’t want people to read, that’s the tell.
